6. I remember reading an article on the web – it claims that some thirty somethings are part of a ‘Dido demographic’. Names including Oasis, Suzanne Vega, Portishead and the Strokes are cited as albums that you may have. I am hooked in – and find that I have four. I send the article to some of my friends – some too have a good number of the titles – the highest being 8, he claims though that it is his wife that bought them. The issue it seems to me is that the average thirtysomething is buying music he or she is exposed to – and these albums have become such big sellers or been so over promoted that even the thirty something has heard of them and bought them.

The article starts: “You like to think that you are cool. And, hey, let’s not be snobbish – maybe you are. You wouldn’t have any rubbish like Sting or Dire Straits in your CD collection. Enya? Clannad? That’s all for old farts, right? …”

It seems ironic that by the time the Guardian picks up on any bands for their ‘Guide’ that the band has crossed over into being part of the Dido demographic they are pitying.

5. The thing that overwhelms is the vast number of bands there are now – all so easily available, yet without a network of friends the job of finding what you want to hear is all down to the individual. But wait! the internet is gonna be my saviour – I can listen to all these bands without spending cash I ain’t got – but where? There are so many internet radio stations and so many are shite – but three years ago I’ve found one I like – Spank Radio – but soon it goes off the air. I look for an alternative for a year or two – but until I go to Perth I don’t find one – then I’m introduced to RTR. RTR is a ‘difficult listening’ channel, but it attracts and the nostalgia value holds me with it. But it has hours of dance interspersed with the music I like and I start to struggle with it. Then I realise Spank Radio is back and I start listening to it again.
