Biere de luxe

18. Back on the Biere de Luxe after some even cheaper Asda white wine – bought with the theory ‘if its cold I can drink it’. Listening to Ska Punk Compunktion compilation.

17. Clares thought that music today is a mix of what has gone before is the same as a classic argument for post modernism in music voiced by one of my tutors at college. He felt all things had been done musically and bands these days were derived from earlier forms. It is certainly true that bands when they are being categorised into genres are usually described in terms of previous genres – the argument being that while this was true to a lesser extent in the 60s and earlier – with the 70s and especially from punk onwards, music was very much derived from earlier music types to a far greater extent. Its kinda difficult for me to agree or disagree with this as I wasn’t born then – but I do feel that surely music must have always been influenced and derived from earlier forms.

I really dont like the argument that everything has been done musically before – it may well be true, but it seems so defeatist. How are we to know what future generations will produce – their lives may be so different from ours that their influences could produce wildly different types of music. I may be being naively hopeful though.

basically I like what I like, I listen to triple j radio, which plays allsorts and if I like a song it doesn’t matter if its cool or not or fashionable it just sounds good to me! I agree that it is easier to be exposed to new music over here as the radio stations seem to play what they want rather than what they are told to play. but I still think that the old stuff is the best and most music nowadays is a mix up of what has been before. been listening to the beetles today and sesame street!

I SPY FOR THE FBI cd

14. This morning my not going to church music, is I SPY FOR THE FBI cd – a cd I picked up in Perth, and was pleased to find no-one there had heard of most of the music on it. And when I listened to it – it was actually ok too.

13. Thinking about Android’s point that thirtysomethings dont have time to listen to music – I have to agree this may be true for some, with there very busy lives – but if they were still keen on music wouldn’t they make time to listen to music still.

Then I go off on a tangent – thinking about personal arguments vs broader arguments – how much of my argument relates only to myself – and consequently is my point of view more broadly, and does this or will this apply to others arguments. I can see with Android – he has cable TV and the music on the radio in Perth is more interesting than in the UK – it is easier for him to find bands, but in the UK without such luxuries – I reckon it is much harder to find interesting bands – the overwhelming amount of airplay during the day here goes to ‘the Dido demographic’, with only a few late night slots such as the Breezeblock and perhaps Lamacq Live catering for my tastes at least. These shows aren’t too easy to access being on quite late in the case of the Breezeblock. John Peel of course still is hanging on, but his weakness (?) for repetitive dance beats puts me off being a regular listener.

i would suggest that thirty something’s declining interest in new music has more to do with a lack of time to listen to it than any difficulty in finding it.theres heaps out there if music is your no 1 thing.still, some interesting musings on your site, mart

11. Playing games from Gek Studio. I like the Joust remake called Skirmish best. Listening to Lloyd Cole Etc today. Lloyd never seems to produce a bad album these days, I need to listen to him in Beer Recovery mode.

Terminator 3

10. Today go see Terminator 3. Like the negative ending. Arnies not looking too old, and I’m still convinced he’s dangerous – the female terminator doesn’t seem as menacing as the morphing Terminator in the second film, and the robots are way too cardboard even for first generation machines. Pity Arnie rides a crap American police motorbike too. But overall it was pretty good. Didn’t notice any music on the soundtrack. Today I’m listening to New Bomb Turks. Its Friday night – maybe I can get some contributions for my blog tonight down the pub.

Play Misty for Me

9. Tonight I’m am made a bizarre request. A friend is going on holiday and he wants to give his woman something special. I am asked to make a CD with Bobby Venton’s ‘Sealed with a Kiss’ followed by a Play Misty for Me style dedication

Music in your 30′s ?

7. I remember too reading a letter in a music mag about how bands like the Strokes are being quickly adopted by thirtysomethings to the aggrevement of the young – how can they rebel if their parents like their music as much as they do. The letter seems to think (probably correctly) the reason the thirtysomethings like this music is because it has such strong similarities to music they listened as young.
